London Zoo, Little Venice and farewell Michelle

We have been meaning to check out the zoo for a while now (especially since it is only a stroll away in Regent's Park) and since they were running a special offer for Antipodeans last weekend we took the opportunity.

The stroll from our place took us down past the canals of Little Venice, which according to Google Maps actually stretch from all the way from the M25 to the West to the Docklands in the East, and definitely go via Camden Lock and other fascinating parts of the city, but seem to be at their most interesting about three blocks from our place.

Little Venice is full of riverboats moored along the canal, only six or eight feet wide but probably thirty feet long. Many of them are brightly painted, and by the gardens that have sprung up around them, probably don't go very far. We didn't even know the area existed (having never found it in a guide book), but while we were there a guided tour boat went past so at least some people must know about it.
Little Venice - look at all of the boats!

Anyway, it is by far the most scenic walk to Regent's Park (although the one past Lords cricket ground is probably close), since after Little Venice you go past some fantastic old mansions overlooking the canal before making your way up into the park.

London Zoo itself was interesting, although a little sad - it felt like a few of the animals were space constrained (much like everyone else in London). Highlights were the otters (aren't they always), tigers (one in particular was an absolute poser) and the gibbons (doing the funky gibbon - they were really really impressive). They've just launched an enormous gorilla enclosure, but the silverback didn't look to as impressed by the crowd as we were by him.

One gorilla, looking slightly underwhelmed by the world

They also had an aquarium which just made us want to go diving again

This Tiger was a bit of a poser

Meerkats - not quite as cool as otters, but much easier to photgraph

Sarah, surrounded by daisies, relaxing in Regent's Park

We finished up our Sunday by having Michelle and Mark over for one last roast before Michelle flew back to Australia - we will miss having her around!
