The Catchpoles arrive.....!

The Sunday before last Di and David touched down into London town for their September visit. Despite a 24 hour plane journey, they did remarkably well to stay awake through Sunday as we took them around the local area.

Monday, Stephen, David and Di took off to the Ritz hotel for 'high tea' - it was fantastic (we felt really posh!) and the food was delicious...

Next stop was Buckingham Palace, where we took in the 'summer opening' of the state rooms and an exhibition of the dress and memorabilia from the wedding of (the now) Queen Elizabeth II. The palace was more impressive than any we've seen before - well worth checking out (if you're here at the right time, which is obviously only in the summer when the royals are on holidays)

Unfortunately the tube staff went on strike that afternoon, so while we found room for Sarah and Di on the last tube (for three days, as it turns out) Stephen and David ended up walking half-way across London.

Tuesday we decided not to risk traveling around London, and to head out to Oxford instead (the trains leave from quite close to our place so we didn't have to use the tube). Oxford was an awesome day trip - I wish I could have studied there! I can't think of the words to do it justice right now (I'm writing the blogs in reverse chronological order and, as you'll see over the next few days, there was a lot to write about) so here are some photos...

Inside the cathedral at Christ Church College (Sarah took this photo and I think it is fantastic)

Sarah with part of Oxford spread out behind her

Stephen at the real New College (his spiritual home, it felt like)

In the grounds of New College, with the original wall of Oxford behind us - really puts UNSW to shame...

Hard workers on the river running through Oxford - one of the nicest parts of the day (but I had the blisters to prove it)

Slackers on the river running through Oxford :)
