Windsor Castle (with Claudia and Greg)

Since we had visitors from out of town, and not nearly enough time to spend with them, Sarah and I took the Monday off work to do some more sightseeing. Our destination this time was Windsor Castle, in the town of Windsor to the west of London.

Visually, the Castle really dominates the plains around it - which is just as well given that there was a distinct lack of signposting in place (however, if you want to get to Legoland there was no shortage of signs).

It was fascinating to see the incredibly opulent state apartments, where the Queen has received hundreds of visiting dignitaries ranging from heads of state to those being awarded knighthoods. A large part of the castle was badly damaged by fire a few years ago, but has since been restored to its original gilded and ornate state.

For me the highlight was St George's chapel, which is inextricably linked to the Order of the Garter, the oldest chivalric knighthood in existence. The chapel has grown somewhat organically, with chapels and naves off the main church dedicated to the memory of one royal figure or another - often quite poignant and personal, and always beautifully done.

In short - well worth the visit, plus it is only a short(ish) train journey from Paddington (our nearest mainline station)!
